Some of the best services are paid services, although you can do some searches for free. Paid services usually deliver a nice, neat report; free searching finds you mountains of data!
A huge archive of links can be found at Cyndi's List, where there are over 264,000 links for genealogy research. It's a bit bewildering, but comprehensive!

The Church of Latter Day Saints currently has one of the largest genealogy databases in the world, and best of all, you can search it for free.
